1966, All India Coordinated Pulses Improvement Project (AICPIP) started at IARI, New Delhi.
1978, headquarters shifted to the then Regional Station of IARI at Kanpur under the name of Project Directorate (Pulses).
Elevated as Directorate of Pulses Research (DPR) in 1984 and became an independent entity under the direct control of ICAR.
1993, DPR upgraded and elevated to the status of Indian Institute of Pulses Research, and simultaneously, AICPIP was trifurcated
Three coordinated projects on Chickpea, Pigeonpea and MULLaRP (Mungbean, Urdbean, Lentil, Lathyrus, Rajmash and Pea) to provide focused attention on each crop.
Later on, headquarter of National Network Research Projects (NNRP) on Arid Legumes (cowpea, guar, mothbean and horsegram) was also shifted to IIPR, Kanpur.
In order to expand IIPR, Kanpur, and its regional centre/station were opened in Dharwad (2012), Bhopal (2013), Bikaner (2019) and Khordha (2020)
