Genesis

• 1966, All India Coordinated Pulses Improvement Project (AICPIP) started at IARI, New Delhi.
• 1978, headquarters shifted to the then Regional Station of IARI at Kanpur under the name of Project Directorate (Pulses).
• Elevated as Directorate of Pulses Research (DPR) in 1984 and became an independent entity under the direct control of ICAR.
• 1993, DPR upgraded and elevated to the status of Indian Institute of Pulses Research, and simultaneously, AICPIP was trifurcated
• Three coordinated projects on Chickpea, Pigeonpea and MULLaRP (Mungbean, Urdbean, Lentil, Lathyrus, Rajmash and Pea) to provide focused attention on each crop.
• Later on, headquarter of National Network Research Projects (NNRP) on Arid Legumes (cowpea, guar, mothbean and horsegram) was also shifted to IIPR, Kanpur.
• In order to expand IIPR, Kanpur, and its regional centre/station were opened in Dharwad (2012), Bhopal (2013), Bikaner (2019) and Khordha (2020)
