Professional Information

Contribution to the scientific advancement

  • Developed and released 16 varieties of different crops.
  • Developed the first extra early mungbean variety ‘Virat’ maturing in <55 days and MABC derived chickpea variety ‘Samriddhi’.
  • Developed and registered 15 unique germplasm lines in Vigna species and chickpea.
  • Developed country-wide distribution map of yellow mosaic disease-causing viruses, mapped and tagged Mungbean Yellow Mosaic India Virus (MYMIV) resistance gene in blackgram.
  • Elucidated the role and expression of VrLEA encoding genes for heat tolerance, NBS LRR encoding genes for MYMIV resistance, and auxin-encoding gene family for water-logging tolerance in Vigna species.
  • Established useful marker-trait associations in mungbean for several traits including grain micronutrients and anti-nutritional characters.
  • Developed >35 superior pyramided lines in chickpea through marker assisted breeding for resistance to Fusarium wilt.
  • Established a wide hybridization garden with >250 Vigna accessions belonging to 19 Vigna species, developed key descriptors in V. vexillata and V. stipulaceae.
  • Developed “Mung Advisor”, a bilingual android-based smartphone application tool.
  • Established the “International Mungbean Improvement Network”.
